The most expensive clarinet in the world

This week I am continuing my series of posts of joy and fascinating facts about unlike musical instruments, with another member of the woodwind family – the clarinet.

What Is The Clarinet and how do you compete it?

  • The clarinet is a member of the woodwind family. That means it is an instrument that you use wind, or rather your own air (by blowing air down the instrument) to make it make a sound.
  • Someone who plays clarinet is called a clarinetist. Or a clarinet player!
  • When they were first invented, woodwind instruments were generally made out of wood, hence the name, and the clarinet is no different.
  • It is a reed instrument with a solo reed that is placed at the mouthpiece. Other reed instruments include the saxophone, oboe and bassoon.
  • To play the clarinet, players blow through the reed, making the reed vibrate and the vibrations then travel down the tubing of the clarinet and escape at the end.
  • The clarinet has a number of unlike registers of notes that it can play, and each one of these registers has a name – like the Chalumeau register for the lowest notes the instrument can play, the clarion register which can sound rather trumpet-like, and the

Just seen a discussion on QI about prestige pricing with the belief that if it costs that much (priced above everything else), it must be good.

Do you think the cost of some prestige soprano clarinets on the market nowadays has gone way over the top? Some above-prestige model Bb and A clarinets are now commanding pretty much the matching price as a basset horn, pro level bass or a top model oboe.

Can you justify spending that much on a clarinet if you detect it plays no better nor worse than a pro model that costs less than half?

What is the most expensive clarinet one can buy? I scan somewhere that Brannen flutes can go for upwards of $40,000, so I became curious of how much a clarinet can go for.

With recent clarinets, the manufacturer's suggested price doesn't count because that's typically not the price you actually pay. I'm talking about the price you actually pay for a new model.

With used clarinets, it should be the usual price range of the clarinet. Pricing is not as precise as with new clarinets because the individual seller decides the price. I could list a broken, moldy Buffet B12 for $1 million, but nobody would buy it. So please, the usual price range only.

    So, how much?

Edit: I'm going to produce it clear that only Bb/A soprano clarinets count. No short clarinets of any kind, though it would be interesting to know how much a subcontrabass would cost...
