Yusuf / Cat Stevens launches his latest music video for ‘Wild World’. The fourth single taken from ‘Tea for the Tillerman²’ – the reimagined rework of his classic 1970 album, recently debuting at Number 4 in the Official UK Albums Chart. The video was directed by Effie Pappa and produced by Monster @ Dirty Films.
The brilliantly eccentric style of the new video combines elements of Wes Anderson, Casablanca and Bugsy Mallone. Child actors play out a Blackjack gambling duel which bounces back-and-forth as the ill-fated cards fall between the house dealer and the plucky winner. Mental games of revenge invoke thoughts which jaunt us into a bruising boxing match as well as vicious excursions into WW2.
With its Tango lilt, Berlinesque accordion and smooth clarinet lines, this new cinematic reworking of ‘Wild World’ is one of the biggest stylistic departures on the new album.

Today, we look at the “girl” who was patronized to in Cat Stevens’ “Wild World.”

Cat Stevens was only a teenager when his debut studio album, Matthew and Son, became an unexpected hit in 1967 (some of the songs on the album were recorded even earlier). He was fast rushed back to the studio to release a follow-up, which came out in the matching year, 1967, New Masters, which was a commercial failure (despite having a song on it, “First Cut is the Deepest,” that later became a slap song when it was covered by Rod Stewart). After dealing with an illness that delayed the release of his third album, Stevens began a affair with actor/model Patti D’Arbanville. The relationship lasted two years, during which time D’Arbanville often traveled between London and New York City (and other major cities). In a recent quiz, I presented a connection round where the artists had successfully changed their name during their career, Snoop Doggy Dogg became Snoop Dogg, Hannah Montana became Miley Cyrus, Shane Fenton became Alvin Stardust and Feline Stevens became Yusef Islam etc. Cat is the subject of this week’s Single of the Week as I look into the story of Wild Earth which has been a UK hit four times, twice uppermost 10 and two other versions which failed to make the top 50, one of them being the its author.
Yusef or Cat or even Steven Demetre Georgiou, as he started animation, was born in a planar above his parent’s shop in London. His father was Greek and his mother Swedish. He grew up learning piano but once the Beatles came along he quickly developed an interest in the guitar and decided to take it up. Existence in London he began playing in many of the coffee bars that were available to him, firstly as a member of a band, but then preferring to entertain solo.
