Savage Pathfinder – Character Creation, Part Two
Last time we explored traits concepts in Pathfinder for Savage Worlds, starting with ancestry and then diving into one of my favorite parts of the game system: hindrances. We started building a dwarf wizard, and decided he would be arrogant– a MAJOR hindrance– and then chose stubborn and mean as two MINOR hindrances. He’s super focused on proving himself to others.
In this post, we’re going to make sure he can follow through on that Arrogance! We’re covering Traits in Savage Pathfinder. This will be a favorite for those of us who love numbers–and a surprising relief for those who don’t want to get caught up in the nitty gritty of crunchy systems. Traits include Attributes, Skills, and Derived Statistics, and basically tell us what our Dwarf can do well.
Let’s launch with Attributes!
ATTRIBUTES
Attributes are the main five “flavors” of actions: Agility, Smarts, Spirit, Strength, and Vitality. Skills and passive effects are dictated by their connected attribute. All characters begin with a d4 in each attribute, since all characters are basically capable of doing a little of everything! And for a tiny perspective, a
FURIOUSLY FAST SAVAGE WORLDS CHARACTER GENERATION
Character creation in Savage Worlds is pretty darn quick and easy. And yet, it’s crunchy enough that it may take a new player quite a bit of time to digest all the options. This is especially true when it comes to Edges and how they alter the game.
During the Covid-19 quarantine, my friends and I hold played a couple of virtual pickup games. For these we simply found some pre-gens to use and created a story on the fly. But it got me to thinking about how we could make traits creation even quicker and easier than it already is, so it could be done at the table. One thing I love about systems like QAGS and Lester Smith’s D6xD6, is that a character can be created, and understood, in just minutes. Part of this is because both of those systems use intuitive natural language to describe a character’s attributes. Further, the systems are rules-light, so there’s no need to recognize the rules to create a good character. The system here re-creates that with Savage Worlds
First, you have to understand my intent. These rules are specifically intended to allow you to create a character in minutes, without f
Savaged.US - Online Savage Worlds Creator
Savaged.Us has been in development for a while. It supports both Savage Worlds Deluxe (recently replaced) and Savage Worlds Adventure Edition (newest version), as well as the Companions (which are organism updated by Pinnacle in line with Adventure Edition). Also has tools for creating various vehicles and such from the Sci-Fi Companion.
Several third party publishers have signed on, so the number of books that the database holds is growing, and you can add custom Edges, Hindrances and Skills.
Personally, I have a rule against using character creators - My reflection process being that if a game requires a character author, it's too complicated - but some people love them. It's free (for the very basic stuff, you don't even own to register - and that includes adding your own custom items, but registering unlocks more books to use) and subscription ($30 per year unlocks every book added to the database, plus lets you save 50 of each type of creation online, such as character, vacuum ships and so on).
Just thought I'd drop that out there in case someone here was interested.
